What Is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid, or DEF, is a non-toxic liquid made of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionized water. It goes into a separate dedicated tank in your vehicle. It never mixes with diesel.

DEF works inside the exhaust system through a process called Selective Catalytic Reduction, or SCR. When the vehicle's computer injects DEF into the hot exhaust stream, it triggers a chemical reaction that converts harmful nitrogen oxide emissions into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.

The result is up to 90% reduction in NOx emissions. No performance loss. No fuel penalty. Just cleaner exhaust coming out of your vehicle.

Why Diesel Exhaust Fluid for Heavy Vehicles Matters in KSA

2025

Year Saudi Arabia adopted Euro 5 emission standards for heavy-duty diesel trucks

90%

Maximum NOx reduction achieved by SCR + DEF in compliant vehicles

180M+

Litres of DEF expected to be consumed annually in KSA by 2030

5–10%

Typical DEF consumption rate relative to diesel usage per vehicle

Saudi Arabia introduced Euro 5 emission standards for heavy-duty diesel trucks in 2025. Every new SCR-equipped truck in the Kingdom needs DEF to operate correctly and stay compliant.

DEF is widely used in trucks, buses, and other heavy-duty vehicles equipped with SCR systems in Saudi Arabia. Construction equipment including bulldozers, excavators, and cranes are also using DEF to meet stringent environmental standards.

DEF consumption in Saudi Arabia is expected to exceed 180 million litres annually by 2030, prompting investments in local blending and storage facilities.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid for heavy vehicles in Saudi Arabia is not optional. It is a legal and operational requirement. Run without it and your vehicle goes into limp mode. Run with contaminated DEF and your SCR system fails. Both scenarios are expensive.

How SCR & DEF Work Together

Diesel Combustion

Engine burns diesel and generates exhaust gases containing harmful NOx

DEF Injection

Vehicle's ECU injects precise amount of DEF into the exhaust stream

Chemical Reaction

DEF converts to ammonia which reacts with NOx over the SCR catalyst

Clean Exhaust

Harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour exit the tailpipe — up to 90% less NOx

What Happens Without DEF

Do not ignore the warning light. Here is what happens when you do.:

  • Your dashboard warning comes on first, typically around 2,000 km remaining. That is your window to top up. If you ignore it, performance starts to reduce. Then the vehicle will not restart after it is switched off.
  • The SCR system frees the engine to be optimized for maximum performance. Running without DEF reverses all of that. Modern heavy-duty trucks are the most powerful and fuel-efficient diesel vehicles ever made specifically because of DEF and SCR working together.

Running out of DEF on a Riyadh highway or a long KSA route is a fully avoidable problem. Keep supply stocked, monitor the level gauge, and top up before the first warning appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

DEF stands for Diesel Exhaust Fluid. It is also called AdBlue® (the European brand name) and AUS 32 under its ISO standard. In Saudi Arabia and KSA, both terms are used interchangeably.

Yes. AdBlue® is the registered European brand name for DEF. Same product, same ISO 22241 standard, same formulation: 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionised water.

Typically 5–10% of diesel consumption. If your truck uses 500 litres of diesel per week, plan for 25–50 litres of DEF. High-load or city-cycle vehicles lean toward the higher end.

Stop immediately and do not start the engine. The fuel system must be drained and flushed completely before the vehicle is used again. This is an expensive mistake to avoid — the DEF filler cap is always blue; the diesel cap is black or green.

Yes. DEF is non-toxic and non-flammable. It is mildly corrosive to copper and zinc alloys, so avoid contact with those metals. Rinse any skin or surface spills with water immediately — DEF leaves white crystalline residue when it dries.

Riyadh AdBlue supplies ISO 22241-certified DEF across Riyadh and KSA in 10L, 20L, 200L, 1,000L, and bulk tanker formats. Call or WhatsApp us for pricing and delivery scheduling.
